The Guilty Verdict of Police Officer Derek Chauvin

The guilty verdict of Derek Chauvin is a step towards police accountability. It is not justice. True justice would mean that George Floyd was still alive today. True justice would mean that Adam Toledo, Duante Wright, Ma’Khia Bryant, Andrew Brown and countless others were also alive and with us today.

Darnella Frazier, a teenager at the time of George Floyd’s murder, recorded the 9 minute video that set in motion protests around the world in solidarity with Black Lives Matter. This trial and the systemic brutalization committed against Black bodies in this country have ignited a racial reckoning in the United States that is reverberating as loudly as Judge Peter Cahill’s reading of the guilty verdict.

To end the state-sanctioned dehumanization and killing of Black people, we need to stay engaged and vigilant in the fight to dismantle systems of oppression. We bear witness to the humanity of George Floyd as well as all victims of police and racial violence. We honor their loved ones and communities, and we celebrate the contributions they have made to our world. We continue to demand stricter accountability for police all over the country.

At Metropolitan Group, we are deeply committed, and actively work, to dismantle racism and white supremacy, internally and in coalition with our clients and community partners. We continue to learn, un-learn, listen, repair and disrupt the ways racism shows up in ourselves, our lives, our workplace and our communities.

In solidarity and in justice,
